CTC30 – Union Street and the City Centre

23 – 23 September 2023

We’re back with a weekend dedicated to the past, the present and – most importantly – the future of Union Street and the City Centre area of Aberdeen.

We’ll be working with the team from Our Union Street; cultural organisations and heritage groups; planners and designers; citizens; and our multi-skilled volunteers, to work on a number of identified challenges over the weekend.

If you have never been to a hackathon before or are interested in knowing more about the projects previously tackled then please check out our hackathon overview page.

Who should attend?

Anyone! Despite our name, coding is only a part of what we do. It’s essential that we have subject area specialists. In this case that might be planners, architects, designers, transport specialists, retail and the urban realm, animators, game designers, archivists, librarians, historians, pupils, students and those who work in research or policy. And those who have less formal roles too.

Of course, coders, data wranglers, designers and other techies are important to a hack weekend.

Over the weekend individuals will champion challenges, then we’ll create projects and teams to work on them over the two days.

Challenges

We will have a number of challenges. Already these include:

  • How can we harness the power of great storytelling with augmented reality to create Union Street-based events that attract people into the city centre ?
  • What if we were to take an existing 3D model of Union Street and turn it into a highly realistic, fully textured and fully editable model of the street that can be used by the Our Union Street team for presentations, what-if scenarios and visualising different choices and options?
  • Document the history of individual Union Street buildings through time.
  • Have a photo walk over the two days to photograph EVERY building on Union Street and make those openly available.
  • and more!

You can read about these and others in more detail here – and you can suggest your own ideas.

Those with long memories may remember CTC6 – the History Jam at which attendees worked on a number of projects relating to the city centre and its history. What opportunities are there to revisit or revive some of those and build on previous work? You can read more about the projects from CTC6 here.

Sponsorship

We are grateful to The Our Union Street team for their sponsorship and support.
